ANDREA TOFANELLI

Andrea was born in Viareggio (Lucca, Italy) on July 26, 1965 and begins studying music and trumpet at age 11 under Prof. M. Peruzzi (former musician with the Don Marino Barreto, Jr. Orchestra) and Mr. I. Giannerini (musician with Dean Benedetti, the famous Italian-American follower of Charlie Parker), while simultaneously attending the Conservatory at the "Istituto Musicale Pareggiato L. Boccherini" in Lucca (Italy). In 1987 Andrea finishes his Conservatory studies with the highest full marks, graduating cum laude. That same year he attends a Master Class given by Armando Ghitalla (Boston Symphony Orchestra soloist and teacher at the University of Michigan) and starts his first jazz studies with O. Valdambrini and S. Fanni, soloists of the RAI network Big Bands in Rome and Milan.

In 1988 Andrea wins the national auditions for the European and Italian tour of the "Orchestra Giovanile Italiana" (Italian Youth Orchestra) as well as the "Teatro Comunale del Giglio" of Lucca, and is selected as a finalist in Rome for the ECYO (European Community Youth Orchestra). In 1989/90 he fulfills his military compulsory service playing in the Italian Air Force Band in Rome.

In the following years, after a short experience with popular dance music, Andrea dedicates himself entirely to jazz, Latin and commercial music, performing many programs for MEDIASET, RAI, TMC and SKY network TV shows (52 to date) and recording several cinema soundtracks and TV commercials for some of the most elite recording studios in Italy.

From jazz to classical to pop music, Andrea has performed in the USA, Luxembourg, Malta, Finland, Germany, France, Lichtenstein, Austria, Holland, Belgium, Scotland, Greece, Spain, Principato of Monaco.

In Italy he has performed with great jazz musicians like Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band (Municipal Theatre of Casalmaggiore 2000, Vicenza Jazz Festival 2003 and during the 2003 US tour with 4 concerts at Blues Alley in Washington, DC), Peter Erskine (Italian tour 1996), Paul Jeffrey, Carl Anderson, Lee Konitz, John Taylor and Palle Daniellson, as well as all the most important Italian jazz artists, and as soloist with the Luxembourg Jazz Orchestra at the "Musek Am Syrdall, XVIIe Saison Musicale de Mensdorf 2004". In Italy, Andrea has accompanied many famous musicians from all over the world including names such as George Michael ("Pavarotti & Friends for Cambodia and Tibet 2000," released on video and CD by Decca), Joe Cocker, Tom Jones, Michael Bublè, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Carl Anderson, Randy Crawford, Matt Bianco, Kid Creole & The Coconuts, Gloria Gaynor (2003, 2004 Italian tours), The Gibson Brothers (2003 Italian tour), Samantha Fox, Imagination, Patrick Hernandez, Tony Hadley and Paul Young.  He has also performed and/or recorded as lead trumpet and soloist with famous Italian pop stars.

In 1999 Andrea records his first solo CD entitled  "Mattia's Walk & Tribute to Maynard Ferguson " released

by the Italian label Splasc(H) Records.  His second solo CD, "Ricordo di Napoli", a tribute to Neapolitan Italian music, was released by the Italian label, Fonotecnice, in 2001.

Furthermore, Andrea teaches Trumpet and Jazz Trumpet at the "Orazio Vecchi" Musical Institute in Modena and presents Master Classes on playing lead trumpet and performing the high range of the trumpet at the "Istituto Musicale Pareggiato L. Boccherini" in Lucca.  He acts as assistant at Maynard Ferguson's seminar during the Vicenza Jazz Festival in 2003.  Andrea also gives seminars for YAMAHA and collaborates with the International Campus of the Gallodoro Municipality, supported by the Government Culture Ministry and Sicily Region, as well as Summer Seminars for the "Artemixta" Musical Association in Barberino Val D'Elsa, the "N.C.D.M. School of Music" in Milan and the "Minale School of Music" in Naples.  Andrea is currently consulting with Clint "Pops" McLaughlin on the first American draft of "Embouchure - The Pros Talk."

He is the Artistic Director of the "Dean Benedetti Jazz Festival" in Torre del Lago Puccini (Five editions, 2000-2004). (Andrea Tofanelli is a YAMAHA artist).
