STEFANO (COCCO) CANTINI
Stefano Cantini was born in 1956 in Follonica, Italy.
He makes his first musical experiences with the local city band playing various instruments. Being especially interested in Jazz music, he dedicates himself to the saxophone and the study of sound and its evolution in jazz, in classical music and in experimental music.
Since the early seventies he has been playing with many jazz groups and has taken part in a small group of musicians that are involved in concerts and recordings. Very soon he is placed under the attention of several recording companies and studios, working as a "session man".
In 1991 he starts teaching the Siena Jazz seminar and teaches master classes until 1997.
He now teaches saxophone at the Communal School of Follonica.
Since 1999 he has been the artistic director of the Grey Cat Jazz Festival in Maremma (southern Tuscany). He has toured worl-wide with artists and musicians, such as Raf, Irene Grandi, Paolo Vallesi, Ivana Spagna, Alejandro Sanz, Laura Pausini, Phil Collins and many others.
He has recorded several Italian award winning films for well known artists like Francisco Nuti and Franco Nero. He was the sax soloist in the Nuti's movie STREGATI which won the "Silver Tape" of Taormina in 1986 for best film music.
Recently he has been collaborating and working on many cinematographic productions, from brief musical comments to longer videoclips.
He also has composed and played in theatrical pieces with Paolo Haendel, David Riondino, Giorgio Albertazzi and others.
He has collaborated with some of the greatest international Jazz musicians like Chet Baker, Elvin Jones, Cameron Brown, Didier Lock Wood, Michel Benita, Billy Cobham, Dave Holland, Billy Hart, Enrico
Rava, Kenny Wheeler, Billy Elgart, Manhų Roche, N. Lee, Dave Liebman, Richie Beirach, Ares Tavolazzi, Roberto Gatto, Louis Sclavis, Rita Marcotulli, Masimo Urbani, Furio Di Castri, Ramberto Ciammarughi, Paul Fresu, Luca Flores, Danilo Rea, Anders Shoenlberg, Palle Daniellson, Raffaello Pareti, Piero Borri and many others.
In 1995 he plays with Michel Petrucciani at the Umbria Jazz Festival and at the Calvė Jazz Festival.
Furthermore he is collaborating with the classical contemporary music group "Tetraktis".
He has played in the most important theaters around the world, for example: National Art Center of Ottawa, the Olimpia in Paris, Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia.
He has done several recordings amongst which are: "STOPARDING" and "TOUCAN" with E.Rava, guest star with the "Giochi Proibiti" group and "BOBERA" with the "Libens" group, "WHAT COLOUR FOR A TALE" with the Furio Di Castri quartet, and many others featuring himself as guest soloist.
In 2001 he makes his first CD: "NICCOLINA AL MARE", a tribute to the great pianist Michel Petrucciani with whom he collaborated for a long time.
In 2003 he starts working with Raffaello Pareti and Antonello Salis on a production for the Grey Cat Festival. Together they publish the CD "IL CIRCO" under the Agea label.
