MAURO GROSSI
Mauro Grossi , born in Livorno in 1959, starts studying the piano at age seven, He receives his degree for classical piano at the P. Mascagni conservatory in Livorno. He later dedicates himself to Jazz music and graduates with the highest full marks from the G.Puccini Conservatory in La Spezia.
It follows a Master in jazz piano under Herbie Hancock at the Mozarteum in Salzburg (Austria). Mauro Grossi furthermore studies composition and high composition under G. G. Luporini.
At a very young age, during the mid seventies he starts to give concerts as a pianist and from the early 1980s on also as conductor, composer-arranger and band leader. Mauro Grossi has performed with international jazz musicians such as Al Grey, Chet Baker, Eddie Henderson, Robin Kenjatta, Peter King, Lee Konitz, Ray Mantilla, Chuck McPherson, Alejandro Sanguinetti, David Schnitter, Tony Scott, Stan Sulzman, Bobby Watson, Kenny Wheeler, Ernie Wilkins, Paul Wertico and James Zollar, just to name a few.
He has performed and recorded with some of the most important Italian musicians like Paolo Damiani, Paolo Fresu, Enrico Rava, Bruno Tommaso, Giovanni Tommaso, Pietro Tonolo, Danilo Rea, Andrea Dulbecco and many others. From 1993 to 1998 Grossi forms part of a Quartet, together with one the most important Italian saxophone players Maurizio Giammarco. With this group he produces two records, the second one under the Blue Note label. Additionally he was part of a duo with Italian clarinet player Gianluigi Trovesi.
From 1997 to 2003 Grossi plays in a Jewish group, the "Shir-Am" trio with American singer Faye Nepon and Ukrainian violist/violinist Igor Polesitsky. Mauro Grossi has performed in the most important theatres and auditoriums in Italy, Germany, France, Poland, Belgium and Russia. He wins the big band arranging contest of Barga in 1987 and is finalist in the international contest for young Jazz Groups of Leverkusen (Germany) 1988.
He was nominated official composer-arranger for important events like the 25 th celebration of EBU-UER European Broadcasting Union, the Italian Jazz Orchestra (which he later
conducted), the Invitation project with Roberto Ottaviano and the Bari Simphony Orchestra.
Grossi has released almost thirty records in different genres. He is band leader of "Bitter Cake Walk" and forms part of the duo and the other in duo"Summer Suite" with vibraphone player Andrea Dulbecco. With the Shir-Am trio Grossi plays the main-feature of the Roberto Faenza's film Prendimi l'Anima , produced and distributed by Medusa Film.
With the same trio he performs at the prestigious Moscow Tschaikovsky Conservatory representing the Italian government at the International Festival "Micholes" in October 2002.
Grossi has just finished a new record as arranger - composer for saxophone player Stefano Cantini together with pianist Rita Marcotulli and the Arkè String Quartet for Egea, an Italian Jazz Label.
He has been teaching Jazz at the P. Mascagni Conservatory in Livorno since 1993.
